The News journalists escape kidnapping bid

PESHAWAR: Two journalists associated with The News escaped a kidnapping attempt on the Kohat Road on Wednesday night.

The reporters “Javed Aziz Khan and Qaiser Khan Afridi” were on their way home on the Kohat Road when they noticed a white Corolla car, with three men on board, chasing their vehicle.

After noticing the suspicious movement of the car, the journalists tried to dodge the chasing vehicle near Dora Road by stopping there for some time. The car of the criminals also stopped at a short distance, apparently to observe the movement of the two reporters.

The suspects continued to follow their vehicle when the reporters resumed their journey, forcing them to speed up their car to avoid a kidnapping attempt. The matter was immediately brought into the notice of senior superintendent of police (SSP), Operations, Peshawar, and SSP Coordination. The SSP Coordination, Qazi Jameelur Rahman, later informed them that two patrolling cars had been tasked to find out the vehicle.

It may be recalled that Javed Afridi, the staff reporter of The News International at Peshawar Bureau, was kidnapped for ransom from the Kohat Road on September 24. He escaped from the captivity of the kidnappers on October 18, 2008.

Kidnapping is on the rise in the provincial capital for the past many months and the government and the police force seem to have failed in countering the crime. Most kidnappings take place on the Kohat Road and the Ring Road.
