The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) to set up press council

KARACHI: With the consultation and coordination of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society and The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) has in principle decided to form a press council.

The standing committee of the CPNE took the decision with the president of the CPNE in the chair. CPNE Vice-President Mumtaz Tahir and Secretary General Ilyas Shakir were also present at the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, Arif Nizami said the press council would perform its duty voluntarily with the spirit of self-accountability and without any assistance from the government. “The government ought to enforce the Freedom of Information Act,” he said, adding that the CPNE would hold talks with the government in this connection. The standing committee proposed that in the press council there would be only two parties i.e. newspapers owners and editors.

The meeting also approved formation of a committee consisting of the president of the CPNE, its secretary general besides M.A. Zuberi, Zia Shahid and Shaheen Qureshi.
