Television (TV) channel approved for Science and Technology (S&T)

ISLAMABAD- Federal Minister for Science & Technology Dr Attaur Rehman said the Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf has approved plans for a separate TV channel for the promotion of science and technology.

Inaugurating the second annual technical conference of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and Pakistan Association of Geoscientists here at a local hotel, the Minister said, the project for a separate TV channel for S&T education will be launched shortly.

He said the government has prepared a plan to establish seven information technology universities in different cities of the country. The minister said the virtual university plan was among the top priority of the ministry as a very large number of the population will be trained through a “distance-learning programme.”

The minister said the digital divide between the developing and developed world was increasing as a major portion of the hard earned money of developing countries is transferred to technologically advanced countries as a price of high valued- added goods. In the past there has been a criminal negligence of the science and technology sector in the country, resulting in increasing dependence on technologically advanced countries. “This negligence has resulted in total collapse of the science and technology organisations, especially research and development organisations,” he said.
