Survey reveals decline in journalism; stakeholders urge unity among Journalist unions in Sindh

Pakistan Press Foundation

The plight of journalists in Sindh, Pakistan, has come under the spotlight following a recent survey that underscored the poor working conditions, delayed and insufficient wages, lack of access to medical and transport facilities, and the absence of a structured pay scale. The study, which spanned seven districts in the province, also painted a bleak picture of the journalism sector, pointing out the closure of numerous media outlets and the subsequent job losses.

Stakeholders Urge for Unity

In a meeting involving multiple stakeholders, including the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and Working Women Welfare Trust, there was a clarion call for unity among journalist unions. It was suggested that an increased awareness of labour laws could help safeguard the rights of journalists. Sheher Bano, a seasoned journalist and trainer, presented the survey findings and shed light upon the rampant issues of harassment, censorship, and threats that journalists frequently encounter.

Unsatisfactory Union Support and Legal Ignorance

The journalists expressed widespread dissatisfaction with their unions and an alarming unawareness of the laws that could potentially provide them relief. Acknowledging this, the Press Information Department (PID) has initiated steps to enhance the capacities of journalists and educate them about the laws relevant to their rights advocacy.

A Call for Collective Action

Representatives from various journalism organizations and political parties accentuated the necessity for collective action to secure the rights of journalists. They emphasized that this is an issue that transcends political and organizational boundaries and requires a concerted and unified front.
