SUKKUR: Sukkur-based journalists belonging to print and electronic media have strongly condemned the attempt on the lives of chief executive and editor and senior reporter of a television channel.

President Sukkur press club Khawaja Jawed presided over an urgent meeting of journalists on Friday evening which strongly condemned the attempt on the lives of chief executive and editor Kawish Ali Qazi and senior reporter Naz Sahito, and demanded of the government immediate arrest of the culprits.

Khawaja Jawed said the year 2007 ended with the tragic killing of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto, and added that due to curbs on the media, the journalists were protesting for the last four to five months. In the first week of new year, attempt on the life of Ali Qazi was made, which is highly condemnable, he said. He said the government was duty bound to provide protection to the lives and properties of the people and to maintain law and order.

Secretary general SPC and bureau chief Sukkur of the television channel Jan Mohammad Mahar demanded of the government to arrest the culprits and award exemplary punishment to them. He said before leaving for Naudero chief executive Ali Qazi had informed all the district police administration between Hyderabad and Naudero, but he was attacked in Wagan, district Larkana and at that time there was no police mobile or police officials, which he said seems to be a conspiracy. He demanded immediate suspension of senior police officials of Qamber-Shahdadkot and Dadu and a high-level probe into the incident.

Ali Qazi and reporter Naz Sahito were on their way to Naudero in a car from Hyderabad on Thursday midnight to offer condolences to PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari on the sad demise of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto.

When the car reached near Wagan, some unknown armed persons opened fire upon them. As a result Naz Sahito was injured, while Ali Qazi remained unhurt.
