‘Sukkur media ready to face the worst’

SUKKUR: Sukkur Union of Journalists (SUJ) President Lala Asad Pathan said that he and the media of Sukkur were ready to face the worst in order to safe guard the freedom of press, rule of law and constitution.

He said this while addressing a protest meeting of the media at Sukkur Press Club on Thursday, which was largely attended by journalists of the print and electronic media. They later held a demonstration in front of the Sukkur Press Club, where they chanted slogans against the restrictions imposed on the media. The media-persons wore black armbands and hoisted a black flag and banners on club’s building.

Lala Asad Pathan who had gone into hiding since Nov’4, 2007 in the wake of police crackdown against media-persons in Sukkur, surfaced on Thursday at the Sukkur Press Club where he was given a warm welcome.

On the occasion, a heavy contingent of police as well as Rangers cordoned off the premises of the club since morning in order to block the PPP procession.

However they failed to stop the journalists’ protest demonstration and the PPP procession.

Others who spoke at the occasion were Shahid Ali, Khawaja Jawaid Ahmed, lmdad Bozdar, Asif Lodhi, Riaz Rajput, Nasrullah Waseer, Liaquat Laghari, and others. Senior journalist including the patron of SukkerPress Club Syed Mushtaque Gilani also attended the meeting.

Later, a resolution was passed, which demanded withdrawal of restrictions on the media and release of all media-persons including the manager of Sukkur Press Club Aslam Dayo.
