Sukkur journalists pass resolution against emergency

SUKKUR: Sukkur-based journalists belonging to the electronic and print media have demanded immediate withdrawal of emergency rule in the interest of Pakistan and its people through a resolution here on Wednesday.

In a meeting held at Sukkur press club, chaired by president Khawaja Jawed Ahmed, the journalists criticised the role of political parties of the country during the current ‘crisis’. Yet civil society groups including human rights organisations, lawyers’ associations and media organisations were praised for their daring role after the imposition of a state of emergency in the country. The meeting was also attended by other office-bearers of the press club and the Sukkur Union of Journalists including Jan Mohammad Mahar, Khalid Bhanbhan, Shahid Ali, Shabbir Bhutto, Mumtaz Bukhari, and Riaz Rajput.

They condemned the ‘undeclared siege’ of the Sukkur Press Club building by the law enforcement agencies for the last three days. They also expressed their strong determination to continue their struggle for the freedom of press. “We will sacrifice everything for press freedom,” they vowed. Lala Shahbaz Pathan, a journalist, also spoke on the occasion and said that he was ready to make sacrifices for the freedom of press. Lala Asad Pathan also addressed the meeting through telephone, in which he paid tributes to the members of Sukkur press club for showing courage and determination for safeguarding their rights.

Speaking from an undisclosed place for about 15 minutes, Lala Asad Pathan remarked that the state authorities were testing his patience and tolerance that was why they had used the police beyond their legal limits for searching him at his house, and instead arrested his two brothers.
