Sufi singer Zangejo laid to rest

KHAIRPUR: Sufi singer and poet Gulshan Zangejo was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Kandrri village on Wednesday. His soyem would be held on Friday in Kandrri. He was 70.

Gulshan Zangejo got recognition first as a poet and then as a singer. He learnt art of singing from Gulzar Ali Khan and Loung Khan.

Around eight recorded songs of Gulshan Zangejo are currently available in the music library of the Radio Pakistan, Khairpur station. He used to sing at different programmes, particularly at Urs celebrations of Roohal Sain and Murad Faqeer. He had a unique style of singing and, to some extent, he also sang semi-classical while singing Kafi Raag.

Zangejo, who was a lower staff employee of SCARP, belonged to sufi and revolutionary poet Murad Faqeer whose shrine is situated in Kotlo, Kotdiji taluka.

Gulshan Zangejo, who suffered prolonged diseases and also remained on dialysis for sometime, never sought financial help from the government nor did he made any appeal through media or any institution.
