Sports journalist Shams-uz-Zaman passes away

KARACHI: Senior sports journalist and Olympic hockey umpire Shams-uz-Zaman passed away on Sunday at the age of 76 in Karachi after suffering a heart attack, announced Sports Journalists Association of Sindh (SJAS).

The SJAS expressed deep sorrow and grief over the loss of the senior sports journalist and great hockey lover.

Shams-uz-Zaman was associated with the Urdu daily Jang. He had covered many international events as a reporter and also supervised international hockey events as an umpire, including Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984, the world cup in Buenos Aires in 1978 and the one in Bombay in 1982, Asian Games held in Tehran in 1974 and three Champion’s Trophies.

He also received the FIH president’s award in 2001 for his outstanding services in hockey. Zaman is survived by a wife, a daughter and four sons.
