Speakers pay rich tributes to veteran journalist

ISLAMABAD – Hameed Nizami Day was observed in the Capital with national spirit and enthusiasm on Tuesday. In this connection, a National Conference in memory of the veteran journalist was held that was attended by senior politicians, government functionaries, members of civil society and journalists.

The speakers paid rich tribute to founder of Nawa-i-Waqt, Hamid Nizami, and said that nationalism and Hameed Nizami were the one and same thing.

Chief Gust of the occasion, Prime Minister Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Attique Ahmad Khan, said that the veteran Hamid Nizami promoted Pakistaniat and nationalism in the country.

He said that late Hamid Nizami laid the foundation of Pakistan’s ideology or Nazria Pakistan in real sense and he devoted his lifetime in pursuit of this noble cause. “It is really heartening to see that the top priority of Nawa-i-Waqt Group has always been Kashmir issue. Hameed Nizami and his brother Majid Nizami never compromised on Kashmir cause, he said “People of Pakistan always played their part for Kashmir cause but people like Hameed Nizmai and Majid Nazmi would always be remembered in golden words for their valuable contributions for Kashmir issue,” the AJK PM said. He said that Nawa-i-Waqt became a daily newspaper on July 19, 1944 and it always stuck to its principled stance on Kashmir and Pakistan’s ideology. “The journalism has seen so many trends but the Nawa-i-Waqt always stuck to its values and ethics. The malicious elements were conspiring to segregate Pakistan but it became nuclear power,” he said.

The PM AJK said that Sardar Abdul Qayum Khan had first raised the slogan “Kashmir Banay Ga Pakistan” (Kashmir would become Pakistan). “Its our duty to play our role in strengthening Kashmir and Pakistan. Today, Pakistan is facing economic, security, social, societal, cultural and religious terrorism. Everybody talks about rights, let us follow Hameed Nizami and talk about responsibilities,” he said.

Federal Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan said that Hameed Nizami was a trendsetter and the trends of values, morality and courage that he set, were the guidelines of standard journalism. “It takes a lot of courage to expose the malpractices of state and government and Hameed Nizami had this courage in abundance.

Today his brother, Majid Nizami, continues his mission. These brothers never compromised on principles and never took benefits from rulers in the form of plots or financial incentives,” she said

Firdous said that the power of pen should be utilised for productive and patriotic purposes, like Hamid Nizami did. “Hameed Nizami’s agenda represented the 98 per cent people of Pakistan who are ordinary people and who want justice from the two per cent privileged people,” she said. She regretted that a section of media was promoting one-sided campaign against the government. The Federal Minister also urged the politicians not to give irresponsible statements and show maturity and responsibility.

Senior Leader All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Syed Yusuf Naseem paid homage to the Nawa-i-Waqt Group and said that dailies Nawa-i-Waqt and The Nation, following the footsteps of Hameed Nizami were truly representing Kashmir issue under the towering command of Majid Nizami. “When India was inflicting highest orders of tyranny, Majid Nizami send his close associate Sultan Sikandar to Srinagar to get first hand information of Kashmir’s struggle. Sultan Sikandar risked his life and bravely exposed India’s highhandedness. This shows the devotion, loyalty and commitment of Nawa-i-Waqt Group towards Kashmir cause. Hameed Nizami and Majid Nizami have played frontline role in promoting KashmirÂ’s independence movement,” he said.

Senior MQM Leader Dr Farooq Sattar said that Hameed Nizami and patriotism go hand in hand.

“Nizamiat and Pakistan are must for each other. Hameed Nizami and nationalism go hand in hand,” he said. Sattar demanded of the introduction of “Charter of Economy” and demanded to tax the privileged feudal in the country.

Other speakers, including AJK Information Minister Mehmood Riaz, AJK Law Minister Sardar Siyaab Khalid, General (Retd) Abdul Qayum, Tikka Khan, Zafar Bakhtawri, Mehtab Khan, Ayesha Masood Malik, Sardar Khan Niazi, Basheer Hussain Nazim, Qari Wali-ur-Rehman, Ghulam Akbar, Fida-ur-Rehman and Marvi Memon also paid profound tribute to the veteran Hameed Nizami.
