KARAK: The slain journalist Ayub Khan Khattak was laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard at Warana Mir Hassankhel village in Takht-e-Nusrati tehsil on Saturday while his son registered the first information report (FIR) against the two accused.

Ayub Khattak was assassinated on Friday near his house by the accused identified in the FIR as Ameenullah and Hub-e-Niaz, residents of the same locality who fled the scene after the crime.

Shamsur Rehman, son of the late Ayub Khattak, told the police that he and his father were near their home when the incident took place. He said the two men opened fire on his father killing him on the spot.

He said the accused were angry that his father had published a news report in the newspapers against them. He said his father was killed for writing the truth against the criminals.

The local journalists and social and political figures of the district attended the funeral prayers for Ayub Khattak in large numbers.

Meanwhile, the journalists’ community staged protest rally against the killing of their colleague. Led by senior journalist Shafiuddin, the journalists marched from Peer Odeen Shah Masjid to the Saddam Chowk.

The journalists, carrying placards, chanted slogans and demanded arrest of Ayub Khattak’s killers. They blocked the Karak-Bannu Road at Saddam Chowk for traffic as they staged the protest rally there.
