Hyderabad: The journalist fraternity has been angry at the murder of Jan Mohammad Mahar and the Sindh government is considering the journalists’ demand to fix head money on the murderer.

Sindh Caretaker Information and Minorities Affair Minister Ahmed Shah said this on Saturday as he addressed media persons at the Hyderabad Press Club.

He said the Sindh government had taken the issue of the journalist’s murder seriously and the caretaker chief minister had asked the Sindh inspector general of police to keenly pursue the case and arrest the murderers and their facilitators.

Shah informed media persons that the chief minister has given him authority to cater to the application of journalists for financial and medical assistance. He added that he would request the CM to release money from his discretionary funds for the development of Journalists Colony.

The information minister maintained that the Sindh government had been continuing the schemes for the people affected by floods. He said the caretaker government was totally impartial and it had already reshuffled the bureaucracy of the province.

The general elections would be held on time, Shah said as he maintained that the law and order situation was under control for holding the elections.

To a question, Shah, who is also the president of the Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi (ACP), said he would arrange a literature festival in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad Press Club President Lala Rehman Samoon also spoke on the occasion. He expressed the hope that the caretaker information minister would resolve the issues of media workers, press clubs, and journalist organisations.

He said that half of the funds for the development of the journalists’ residential colony had been paid by the Sindh government, and requested that the rest of the funds be also released.

He said the culprits involved in the murder of Mahar must be arrested and brought to justice. He lamented that the journalists had been protesting for months, but no major arrest had so far been done by the police in connection with the journalist’s murder.

The caretaker minister also distributed trophies and certificates among winner and runner-up journalists of the press club who participated in a sports event at the club.

Later, Shah visited the Kali Mata Temple on Hali Road, Hyderabad, and the church at Hur Camp.
