Sindh Government, Business Organizations Agree to Strengthen Fact-Checking System to Curb Spread of Fake News

On February 25, the Sindh government and business organizations agreed to strengthen the fact-checking system to curb the spread of fake news on social media. The decision was made during a meeting of the Sub-Committee on Information of the Business Facilitation and Coordination Committee, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon.

Memon stressed that the spread of fake news could have serious repercussions for businesses and the overall economy. He reiterated the Sindh government’s commitment to taking effective measures against fake news and misinformation to safeguard the interests of the business community.

He highlighted the importance of responsible journalism and collaboration between relevant stakeholders in tackling fake news. He also called for stronger ties between the business community and the information department to prevent the circulation of misinformation.

The meeting was attended by prominent businessman Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, President of the North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry Faisal Moiz Khan, President of the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry Junaid Naqi, and Senior Vice Chairman of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Zia-ul-Arifeen. Also present were Secretary Information Nadeem-ur-Rehman Memon, Secretary IT Noor Ahmed Soomro, and Director P&D Information Moiz Pirzada.

Participants deliberated on media-related challenges faced by the business community, the negative impact of fake news on business and economy as well as on developing an effective strategy for this.
