SHC orders restoration of private TV channel’s telecast

KARACHI – Sindh High Court (SHC) ordered Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and the cable operators to restore the telecast of a private TV channel, while the court summoned the respondents to submit their comments in the next hearing.

A SHC bench headed by the Chief Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani, heard the petition filed by Inayat Hussain and eight other citizens. After hearing the preliminary arguments from the petitioners’ counsel, the bench issued directive to the federal government, the Pemra and cable operators to submit their comments before the court in the next hearing on August 18.

The Federation, the Pemra and four cable operators were cited as respondents in the petition. The petitioners said that no cable operator could halt the service under Clause-28 of the Pemra Ordinance. Counselling on the behalf of the plaintiffs, Behzad Hyder Advocate submitted before the court that the Pemra should suspend and cancel the licenses of cable operators under clause-30 of the ordinance for violating the Pemra laws.
