Sharmila, Shazia call for end to karo-kari
KARACHI: Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister Sharmila Farooqui has said that the notorious tradition of karo-kari should be eliminated on war-footing basis from the society and those involved in it should be awarded with stern punishments.
Sharmila said this while delivering a keynote address at a workshop on karo-kari that was organised by the United Nations Development Programme and Sindh police at the Karachi Central Police Office.
Sharmila said that the police was a reflective body of the state, adding, “A comprehensive strategy should be chalked out to train police personnel for enhancing their capacity with specific reference to human rights.” Sharmila also said that karo-kari was being carried out on the basis of personal enmity and to defame the status of Sindh, adding that the police must carry out stern actions against the elements involved in this illegal practice and officials should reject political pressures.
Speaking on the occasion, Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri said that karo-kari was religiously, morally and legally an extremely brutal act, adding that there was no link of karo-kari to the culture of Sindh and that it was only linked with tyrant people and their wrongful thoughts. Shazia also said that the time had come to introduce positive thought in the society because karo-kari could not be eliminated until a positive change is brought to people’s way of thinking, adding that it was the responsibility of the police to restore faith among people by promptly responding to their complaints.
Shazia further said that the media was playing its role for bringing an end to the criminal traditions in the society and it was also the media’s responsibility to continue doing so to resolve public issues.
