Sethi lauds Punjab’s Freedom of Info Act

LAHORE: Najam Sethi has lauded the Freedom of Information Act approved by the Punjab Cabinet, saying that the move shows good intention of the provincial government.

In Geo News programme, ‘Aapas Ki Baat’, he said that the new Act would ensure a lot of freedom to get information and transparency to such a level that if there was corruption in Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif or anybody else’s government and violation of laws, all the relevant information would be accessible.

Talking about laying the foundation of Pak-Iran gas pipeline project, Sethi said that just a week before the dissolution of the PPP government, President Asif Zardari played a good shot and that he could claim to have rejected the US by launching the project to end the energy crisis. If the PPP gets another term in the Centre and the US tightens up the noose against it, President Zardari can blame the US for the project’s failure and if PML-N forms government, he could accuse Nawaz of not working on the project, he said.

Sethi said the gas pipeline project depended on US-Iran and Pak-US relations, adding that in case of a war between the US and Iran, there would not be any progress on the project and if there was a new government after election in Iran which reached some agreement with the US, there would not be any embargos on it.However, there was no danger of immediate sanctions on Pakistan just as there was no possibility of immediate gas supply by Iran.

Najam Sethi said that according to the agreement, the gas rate had been fixed at 77 percent of crude oil price which was quite expensive as gas would continue getting expensive along with the crude oil.
