SESSI Announces Social Security Coverage for Unemployed Journalists

Pakistan Press Foundation

On Wednesday, the Sindh Employees Social Security Institution (SESSI) Commissioner, Miandad Rahoojo, announced an initiative to provide monetary and medical benefits to unemployed journalists. Speaking at an awareness session organized in collaboration with the Karachi Press Club (KPC), Rahoojo stated that these journalists would be registered as ‘home-based workers,’ a designation that grants them access to essential social security services.*

The session, held at the KPC, highlighted the pressing needs of media professionals who often lack formal employment contracts or job security. KPC Secretary Shoaib Khan underscored the importance of the initiative, affirming that the KPC would act as a ‘guarantor’ for the registration process. “We are committed to supporting the journalist community and ensuring their inclusion in the social security network,” Khan said.

Labour Minister Shahid Thahim, who also attended the session, listened to the concerns raised by various representatives of the journalist community. He emphasized that including media workers in the social security system was crucial for their financial and medical well-being. “We understand the unique challenges faced by journalists, especially those without regular employment,” Thahim remarked, promising that the government would take all necessary steps to address these concerns.

During the meeting, KPC representatives urged the Labour Minister to accelerate the registration process for media workers. They also proposed that Benazir Mazdoor Cards be issued to all media professionals, enabling them to seamlessly access healthcare and other benefits.
