Senators want Geo TV to cover proceedings

ISLAMABAD- Senators belonging to opposition parties demanded of the chairman Senate to allow the Geo television to cover the proceedings of the session after they piled heaps of complaints against the state-run PTV.

The angry senators lashed out at the Pakistan Television for not giving them prominence in the news bulletins while reporting the proceedings of Upper House of the Parliament. The issue came up for discussion when Senator Amanullah Kanrani of Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP) stood up on a point of order and started castigating the PTV for not giving them due importance in the news. Amanullah said that it was unfortunate that the state-run electronic media was not giving proper coverage to the senators and their views on LFO.

He pointed out that the senators, especially belonging to Balochistan, were being ignored by the PTV and said that was unacceptable to them. He said the senators from Balochistan on March 27, 2003 spoke in detail about the LFO issue, but, he lamented, the PTV did not name a single senator from the province in the news bulletin.

Senator Khan said by ignoring their dissent voices on the state-run media the government was giving impression that the parliamentarians of Balochistan had no objection over the LFO. Upon this, Senator Ilyas Bilour of ANP stood up on a point of order and demanded of the chairman Senate to allow the Geo TV to cover the proceedings of the session. He said that this would bring balance in the coverage of the Upper House proceedings.

He said that this would be very good on the part of government to allow the private channel to air the proceedings of the House without any bias. Chairman Senate Mohammadmian Soomro took the senators into confidence that he would look into the issue and apprise them of the decision later.
