The Senate on December 13 unanimously passed the National Forensic Agency (NFA) Bill, 2024 with amendments, transforming the National Forensics Agency into an independent body to strengthen forensic capabilities nationwide.

Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar piloted the bill in the House on behalf of the Minister for Interior. The bill had been passed by the Senate Standing Committee on Interior in November after it was introduced in the Senate by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in October.

Tarar stated that the NFA would provide services to all provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) in addition to existing forensic labs and the establishment of a digital forensic lab.

The minister underscored the need for an independent NFA. Citing the overloaded forensic laboratory in Lahore, established in 2010 under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, he emphasized the importance of setting up similar laboratories in all provinces to address the growing demands for forensic services.

The minister added that establishing an independent NFA will help eradicate crimes by providing state-of-the-art tools.

Senators Quratulain Marri and Zamir Hussain Ghumro had moved amendments to the bill, which the House passed.
