Senate panel stops media from coverage

By Imran Ali Teepu

ISLAMABAD: Without any prior official communication, a sub-committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology on Tuesday barred media personnel from covering its proceedings.

Reporters gathered outside the committee room, where PPP Senator Maula Bakhsh Chandio was presiding over a meeting of the panel investigating the alleged illegal appointments made by Adviser to Prime Minister for IT and Telecom Latif Khosa, were told by security staff that they were not allowed to witness the proceedings.

The committee was also looking into the removal of a senior official of Universal Service Fund which comes under the IT and Telecom Ministry.

A Senate official, who went inside to inform the Senate panel that a few media representatives were present outside to cover the event, came out with the surprising message that the committee had unanimously decided to bar journalists from the meeting.

He said that members of the sub-committee, including Senator Saleem Saifullah and in-charge of IT and Telecom Latif Khosa, favoured the decision to refuse entry to journalists.
