Seminar held on ‘Farmer Women in Post-Flood Situation’

LAHORE: In connection with 100th International Women’s Day, South Asia Partnership Pakistan (SAP-PK) organised a seminar, tilted “Farmer Women in the Post-Flood Situation”, at the Punjabi Complex, Qaddafi Stadium.

Gender Desk Coordinator, Risham Adnan, gave a welcome address to the participants and briefed them about the objectives of the seminar. The wife of Punjab governor, Mussarat Latif Khosa, was of the view that the government must take practical steps to eliminate domestic violence.

Shabnam Rashid from SAP-PK highlighted the importance of International Women’s Day. She voiced her concerns over the gaps in the ongoing relief and rehabilitation programmes. She demanded land reforms to provide economic relief to the flood victims.

A member of the provincial assembly, Sajjida Mir, criticised the indifferent attitude of the government toward flood-affected people. She demanded issuance of NICs to the flood-affected people, particularly women on an urgent basis in order to get them access to Watan Cards and Benazir Income Support Programme.

A number of flood-affected people were also among the participants. In the last session, they informed about different economic and social problems caused by the floods.

Bhawalpur Cholistan Development Council presented a theatre play on “Women Farmer Rights”. Afzal Sahir, a prominent poet, also read out his poetry with regards to women rights. The position and status of women in society cannot be changed without economic empowerment of women, said SAP-PK Deputy Director, Irfan Mufti, in his concluding remarks.
