Schoolgirl gangraped, culprits at large

HYDERABAD, April 04,2005: A 14-year-old schoolgirl was gang-raped at Ratodero town in Larkana district on March 31. The girl was abducted and then subjected to gang-rape allegedly by three men, Samar Shah, Kamran Shah and Arif Shah.

The three men are, reportedly, from an influential family of Ratodero town and they are at large. The girl was reportedly gang-raped in the house of a local trader, Jai Ram Das, who also is at large. The Ratodero police have registered a case against the culprits. The police have detained Das’s uncle Pehlaj Roy.

The medical examination of the girl conducted at the taluka hospital Ratodero had proved that she was repeatedly raped, sources said. The police produced the girl twice before a local magistrate, but her statement could not be recorded. The girl and her mother have been shifted to Larkana where they are staying in the Women’s police station.

Political parties are protesting against the delay in the arrest of alleged rapists. The Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz staged a protest and then observed a token hunger strike at Ratodero on Sunday, demanding immediate arrest and capital punishment to the culprits.

Sindh National Front Chairman Mumtaz Ali Bhutto’s son Amir Bux Bhutto visited the victim’s house and met her father. He condemned the incident and claimed the rapists were from the PPPP. He assured the victim’s family that his party would help them get justice.

The girl’s father complained to Bhutto that “the alleged rapists are forcing my family to withdraw the police case and the police are demanding bribe to pursue my complaint.” He said he was a poor man and he did not have the money to pursue the case in a court of law.

Amir Bhutto, reportedly, assured the girl’s father and his family that his men would protect them. Talking to reporters, Amir Bhutto warned the police that if the culprits were not arrested immediately, his party would decide a strategy to punish the culprits in cooperation with the people.
