Pakistan Press Foundation

ISLAMABAD: The Punjab has reported the second polio case this year. Earlier this year, a three-year-old girl had tested positive for polio in the Essakhel area of Mianwali district and now another girl from the province has been found to be suffering from the crippling virus.

According to an official at the Prime Minister’s Monitoring and Coordination Cell for Polio, the latest Punjab polio case is Nurunnisa, 8, from the Bhalwaal area of Sargodha district. He said that the girl had contracted the disease though she was vaccinated against it many times. The official said that the case would be thoroughly examined to know the reason of her suffering from polio despite vaccination. He said the Sargodha case had taken the number of this year’s polio sufferers to 14.

According to him, most of this year’s polio cases i.e. six were reported from the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, followed by four in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and two in Sindh and the Punjab each.
