Saghir Ahmed passes away
KARACHI: Saghir Ahmed Siddiqui, a journalist well known for his reporting on matters of crime and civic bodies, died on Thursday. He was 62. He is survived by wife, three sons and two daughters.
He was buried in the Sakhi Hasan graveyard after Isha prayers. Soyem will he held at his residence, B-176, Block-4-A, Journalists’ Society, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, after Friday prayers.
Mr Siddiqui, who served Dawn as staff reporter from 1966 till his retirement in 1997, had been suffering from cancer of esophagous.
He underwent a major surgery in the US in 1998.
According to his family, Mr Siddiqui’s condition deteriorated on Thursday morning and he was rushed to a private hospital where he died.
Mr Siddiqui was born in Muradabad, India, in 1937. He entered journalism in the late 50’s as a reporter in the Morning News.
Soon, Mr Siddiqui earned the reputation of a hardworking and alert reporter. During his stint in the Morning News, he worked as a crime reporter, a job he did a lot of enthusiasm till his joining Dawn.
In Dawn, Mr Siddiqui worked on numerous assignments. Prominent among them were reporting on civic issues vis-Ã -vis the performance of the departments concerned.
_Mr Siddiqui was also known for his exhaustive and regular reporting on the city’s major transport project: Karachi Mass Transit Project.
Following his retirement from Dawn, Mr Siddiqui joined a consultancy firm as a media adviser and worked for it for some time.
The Karachi Union of Journalists, the Karachi Press Club and the Pakistan Herald Workers Union have condoled Mr Siddiqui’s death.
