SAFMA honours journalists

LAHORE, May 2, 2005: The South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA) arranged a dinner for Punjab Union of Journalists (PUJ) and Lahore Press Club (LPC) office bearers at Hotel Avari on May 1.

SAFMA secretary general Imtiaz Alam, PUJ president Raja Jalil Hasan Akhtar, senior vice president Anjum Herald Gill, LPC president Arshad Ansari, secretary general Noman Yawar and others attended the dinner.

Alam urged the guests to make efforts for press freedom. He announced full support to the journalists. He said that owner-editorship was depriving journalists of their rights. “Editorship is the right of journalists,” he added.

SAFMA also urged the media community to observe Press Freedom Day on May 3, as a day of solidarity with the media and the journalists’ under-attack in Nepal. A rally has been planned by SAFMA on May 3 to support the Nepalese journalists.
