SAFMA flays torture of journalist

LAHORE: The South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) secretary general has condemned the manhandling of journalist Umar Cheema, and demanded an inquiry into the matter and that the culprits behind Cheema’ torture be arrested and brought to justice, according to a SAFMA press release.

Taking serious notice of the attacks on journalists and increasing causalities amongst them, SAFMA Secretary General Imtiaz Alam demanded that the journalists should be provided protection, and that the freedom of expression to be protected at all costs.

He condoled on SAFMA’s behalf at the demise of a worker of a private TV channel, and expressed solidarity with the journalists who had been injured in Quetta during a terrorist attack.

Alam said that the media was under attack from various state and non-state actors, which was reprehensible. He called upon the authorities to take measures to ensure the safety of journalists and arrest the culprits who had so far gone unpunished.
