Saad arrest: Editor of daily served legal notice
LAHORE: Chief Editor of an Urdu daily was Tuesday served a legal notice by Khawaja Saad Rafique for publishing a news item regarding his arrest, scuffle with military personnel upon resistance and later pleas for begging mercy from them.
The news item, which appeared on the back page of October 16, publication, also claimed that the PML leader was taken to some unknown place and was being investigated for corruption.
Khawaja Saad Rafique, through his lawyers, has stated that he has not been maltreated let alone beaten by military authorities or any law enforcing agency and, therefore, accordingly, the said news item is absolutely false.
Khawaja Saad also denied another news item, which appeared in the same newspaper on the same day, alleging Khawaja Saad had purchased 2000 guns as having been entrusted with the mission of sabotaging the opposition rallies.
He has denied another news item, which claimed his being a leading participant in the rowdy invasion of the Supreme Court, replying which he has stated of his having been exempted from appearance before the court by the Supreme Court as against Mian Munir, Akhtar Rasool and others who were required to continue appearing till the conclusion of the case. In view of the same, the said news item is also misleading.
Another news-story published in the same daily, dated October 18, 1999, on the back page, seems to project the involvement of Kh Saad in purchase of certain premises called Bucha Garden scandal.
Again in the news printed at the back of the daily, dated 19-10-99, the same fabricated news has been published with an untrue headline.
Given the damage to the good repute of Kh Saad apart from the personal shock, the attorney sought a contradiction of all the five news within 10 days of receipt of the legal notice on the back page and refrain from printing any such false and fabricated news in future.
In the event the accused did not comply, Kh Saad’s counsel would initiate legal proceedings.
