Rs1m for welfare of female prisoners

cheque of Rs1 million was handed over on Monday by Sindh Minister for Women’s Development, Tauqir Fatima Bhutto, to the DIG Jails Karachi. The money will be used for the release of women and children who are serving additional terms due to the non-payment of fines.

Presiding over a meeting of the Prisoners Aid Committee, Bhutto also announced to pay the fines of eight female prisoners at the Karachi jail, seven at the Hyderabad jail and two from Sukkur Jail-II. She said that the present government had adopted the policy that no prisoner should remain in jail for inability to pay fines.

The minister expressed satisfaction with the overall conditions of female prisoners, except in the field of healthcare. She further said that many foreign female prisoners were also getting benefit from the Rs1 million-fund. Bhutto hoped that female Pakistani prisoners in other countries (if any) would also benefit from this gesture of goodwill.
