Roundtable on linkages between media, PHF held

Iftikhar Marwat

Islamabad: In order to strengthen linkages between Pakistani media and the Pakistan Humanitarian Forum (PHF), a roundtable conference was held here on Thursday.

The main objective of the gathering was to promote a shared understanding of humanitarian principles of the PHF and highlight the work carried out by PHF members both during the flood response and in long-term development projects. The participants shared their views as to how to deepen understanding between the media and the PHF.

Representatives from different international NGOs attended the meeting. Cristina Graziani, coordinator, Pakistan Humanitarian Forum, George Petropoulos, country director, ACS International, Jack Byrne from CRS, Jim Mason from Cordaid, Anie Fay from Concern and Haider Yaqub from Plan Pakistan spoke on the occasion and stressed the need for mutual cooperation between media and different NGOs working in humanitarian field.

Speaking on the occasion, Haider W Yaqub, country director Plan Pakistan said that international organisations spend million of dollars every year for poverty alleviation in Pakistan. “This money helps children get education, health facilities, water and sanitation and other basic facilities. This aid plays critical role in development of the marginalized and downtrodden people in the country like Pakistan where the government support in these sectors is not enough. However, some elements in the civil society do not appreciate the work of NGOs due to some misconceptions that need to be removed,” he added.
