Role of media in peace building highlighted

KARACHI: Participants of a national consultative workshop on ‘Peace Building’ have said that media can play a pivotal role in promoting peace and harmony in the society. Journalists should report ongoing conflicts with consciousness, impartiality and factuality.

This was observed by the participants, belonging to the 23 districts of Pakistan, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), FATA and North Waziristan, who had gathered in a national workshop organized by Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) at a local hotel Monday.

They said the journalists should report conflicts with the sensitivity of promoting peace and harmony in the society.

Secretary General of PPF Owais Aslam Ali, senior journalist Humair Ishtiaq, Rashad Bukhari, Sheryar A Khan, Lala Hassan and others said journalist should give the first priority to their safety while reporting militancy and other conflicts; while newsroom should also realize the ground realities and sensitivities of conflict reporting.

They said journalists were facing threats from state and non-state elements; making them more vulnerable. They also brave political and social pressures but despite these threats and pressures, the journalists are reporting various issues with courage. State should fulfill its responsibility to protect journalists.

It was noted that sometimes journalists took position on various issues, which was against the media ethics but as a whole the Pakistani media was reporting issues responsibly.

Print media journalists from North Waziristan, Rawalakot, Mirpur, Quetta, Sukkur, Gujrat, Lahore, Gwadar, Mastung, Multan, D.I Khan, Sahiwal, Sawabi and Muzaffarabad shared their views on peace and conflict reporting.
