Resurgence of local cinema

Pakistan Press Foundation

Sir: The thrilling new Pakistani movie Waar has become an instant blockbuster, touted as the most well made Pakistani movie to date. The dramatisation really is applause worthy and so are the performances by all the actors. What is most amusing is that veteran Indian film-maker Ram Gopal Varma has saluted the movie in more than just mere words. Recent tweets by the director see him gushing over the movie, going so far as to say that he would gladly leave directing movies in India to become an assistant of Pakistani director Bilal Lashari, who is the man behind Waar. It is indeed a huge compliment to find an accomplished director such as Mr Varma so inspired by our homegrown talent.

Pakistani movies are now making their presence felt at home and abroad with a plethora of well directed and superbly acted cinematic gems being released in the past year. It is wonderful to see how we are managing to get back on track with hardly any resources at our disposal. If this is the rebirth of Pakistani cinema I welcome it with open arms!
