Reproductive rights termed human rights
KARACHI: Reproductive rights are in fact human rights and all stakeholders of society should play their due role in recognition of these rights, said noted human rights lawyer Zia Ahmed Awan on Monday evening. Addressing at a ceremony of launching of a Madadgaar documentary, he said the Madadgaar helpline besides raising voice against the exploitation of rights of women and children was also working on the issues of reproductive rights in Pakistan. Sindh Minister for Culture Sharmila Faruqi said that parents and teachers could play an important role in raising awareness about reproductive rights. She said in most families people do not talk about the reproductive health issues with grown-up children. She said the Sindh Assembly has passed a “child marriages restraint bill” which would prove beneficial for younger population. Dr Sikandar Sohani of Aahung, Rashid Khan of Visionary Foundation and Shafaq Ahmed of the Institute of Clinical Psychology, Karachi University also spoke on the occasion.
