Reliable data regarding women needed

THIS is with reference to Aisha Khan’s article commending Nadra for registering women in a large number (Aug 11).

For the planning and programming of any project in the country, reliable data is essential.

National Identity Cards (NICs) will help identify the economic and social status of women in the country.

The female population in Pakistan is mostly lagging behind in education.

In the absence of data of illiterate females, programmes taken up so far for the improvement of the lives of women have generally proved to be a failure.

Besides, poverty alleviation is not visible through them. Whatever data is available after the registration can definitely guide in the establishment of schools for girls.

Women work at home all day long and look after their children. Their work is seldom accounted for.

There is dire need for the education of such women so that they may utilise their skills in earning a livelihood which can also help in increasing their income.

This would also help in raising their standard of living. An educated woman can surely cultivate the culture of a healthy and clean environment in their homes and around.

The education task force can benefit from Nadra’s latest data.
