LAHORE: Punjab University Department of Information Management and PU Library jointly organised a seminar on the role of reading in personality development to mark World Book and Copyright Day at Al-Raazi Hall on Friday.

Punjab Commission on Women Chairperson Dr Fauzia Waqar, Oriental College Principal Dr Muhammad Fakharul Haq Noori, Department of Information Management Chairperson Dr Kanwal Ameen, poet Rehman Faris, faculty members, librarians and a large number of students were present on the occasion.

The speakers urged the government to take measures to promote book reading and book-loving culture in the country. These included providing a subsidy on books and establishing more libraries etc.

In her address, Dr Fauzia Waqar said the reading habit had significantly declined in Pakistan, while there were strong links between deep study and behaviours, emotions, feelings and awareness. She said reading produced positive thoughts which assured a healthy life.

Dr Fakharul Haq Noori urged teachers to read more books to boost their knowledge. He said books were good trainers and nobody could deny their importance. Dr Kanwal Ameen said one could feel relaxed after reading literature and novels etc. “We learn about the hidden aspects of the society through book reading. Our schools have no book reading corners and the bad behaviour of librarians at colleges is the main cause for the decline of reading culture,” she said.

Rehman Faris said the books were the most important tool in character building and parents, schools, colleges and universities should play their role in promoting the reading habit. “Government should reduce prices of books so that students could buy reading material from their own pockets,” he suggested.

“There is no substitute for books and we should exchange books as gifts.”

Dr Haroon Usmani said a person who did not love books could not evolve in life and students should also read books other than curriculum. He also shed light on book lover award and PU book club activities.

Later, the Book Lovers Award 2018 was presented to Adeeba Akram, Ayesha Ahmad, Mehrooz Ahmad Khan, Chaudhry Suleman Abid, Mujahid Hussain, Qaddafi Ahmad, Sahabzada Saoodul Hassan, Sajid Hassan, Shoaib Ahmad and Waleed Ahmad.
