Rape victim attempts self-immolation

HYDERABAD, April 2, 2005 : The police foiled an attempt of self-immolation by a woman outside Hyderabad Press Club on April 01 and took her into protective custody, witnesses said.

The 30-year-old woman attempted self-immolation in protest against the release of her alleged rapists by the police, her younger brother told the Daily Times. He said his sister was gang-raped by Amin, Misri, Jumman and Daud on December 25, 2004 on the outskirts of their village, Gullan Khokhar, in Tando Mohammed Khan taluka.

The woman’s sister claimed her sister was raped while working in the fields. The rape victim’s brother said the police first refused to register a case against the culprits, but later they registered their complaint on the orders of a court of law, to which they had moved for justice. “The police arrested the culprits and later released them unlawfully’” he said.
