Rape victim attacked while going to hospital

NAWABSHAH: A rape victim was attacked while going to hospital for a check-up in the vehicle of Women Crisis Centre along with their staff members. The incident took place in a village near Sakrand on Tuesday.

Attackers couldn’t succeed in their mission and had to flee as people present in the vehicle began shouting for help.

Police sources said that staff members of Women Crisis Centre were taking a 16-year-old rape victim from her house in Mir Khan Leghari village to Sakrand taluka hospital for a medical check-up when armed men intercepted the vehicle they were travelling in near the home of the girl.

The centre’s legal officer Farhana Erum said that Dilbar Leghari, Noor Mohammed and other armed men first threatened the victim and Women Centre’s staff to withdraw the case and then began thrashing them and subsequently opened fire.

However, they fled upon sensing the danger of getting caught as the staff began shouting for help.

Ms Erum told Dawn that a woman filed an application at their centre on September 6, against her son-in-law, Meeran, for kidnapping and raping her younger unmarried daughter earlier on August 18.

The complainant was a poor widow and could not face the accused so she came to the Centre for help, she said.

The centre filed an application before district and session judge of Shaheed Benazirabad who directed Sakrand police for report and later for registration of FIR, said Ms Erum. Police then registered a case but did not issue a letter to victim for medical check-up she said adding that the Centre then approached the police high-ups.

Later, staff members of the Women Centre picked the girl from her house and were going to the hospital when attacked, she said adding that earlier accused Noor Mohammed had called on Centre’s landline and threatened its manager to ask the girl to withdraw the case or prepare for the consequences.

Head Munshi at Sakrand police station said that a case had been registered on the complaint of girl’s mother accusing Dilbar Leghari, Meeran Leghari, Noor Mohammed and others of attempt to murder and attacking the vehicle in which the girl was being taken for the medical check up.

No accused was arrested till the filing of this report.
