Punjab PA passes resolutions against Quran desecration in US

LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly on Tuesday vehemently condemned the act of desecration of the Holy Quran by US churchmen Terry Jones and Wayne Sapp and demanded registration of a case against them in the International Court of Justice.

Two resolutions, moved by Law Minister Rana Sana Ullah Khan and PML-Q parliamentary leader Chaudhry Zaheerud Din Khan, were passed unanimously, which condemned the shameful act on the part of US pastor Wayne Sapp and Terry Jones at a church in Florida.

The PA session, which started after a delay of nearly one hour with Deputy Speaker Rana Mashood Ahmed in the chair, remained critical of the dirty act perpetrated by the US churchmen from the very outset.

Soon after the session started, it was PML-Q Parliamentary leader Chaudhry Zaheer ud Din Khan who sought permission from the chair to move the resolution against the act of desecration of the Holy Quran.

Law Minister Rana Sana Ullah Khan on a point of order stated that the treasury also wanted to move a resolution over the issue after which the chair remarked that the resolutions could be tabled from both sides on the serious issue.

The PA legislators on the occasion continued to blame the US and Israel for this nefarious act and expressed grave concern over the act. “The Punjab Assembly expresses its serious concerns and anger over the incident took place under the supervision of Terry Jones, a priest belonging to a church of Florida where a pastor set ablaze the most sacred book of Muslims, the Holy Quran” said the resolution tabled by Law Minister Rana Sana Ullah on behalf of the treasury.

The resolution further said the act of the priests severely hurt the sentiments of Muslims and caused heart burning to the Muslim Ummah and the House demands the federal government take up this issue at international level. It said, “The House demands filing of a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against all responsible for this incident.” The resolution was passed unanimously.

Opposition leader Raja Riaz Ahmed on a point of order condemned the incident and assured the House that he would take up the matter with the central government to summon the US ambassador. He said that such action could not be tolerated and the elements behind it would have to face the wrath of Muslims.

Speaking on that occasion, the law minister said Terry Jones had already expressed his will to do this shameful act but he couldn’t do so due to international pressure. Meanwhile, PML-Q parliamentary leader Chaudhry Zaheer ud Din also moved the resolution, which expressed serious concern over the incident.

The resolution also alleged that Terry Jones hatched this conspiracy with the backing of Israel and the US and termed him an enemy of Islam. It stated that all the people of the country, including the minorities, expressed serious concern over this incident and demanded a case with the ICJ to ensure punishment to the perpetrators to avoid such incidents in the future.

Later, the PA members led by Deputy Speaker Rana Mashood Ahmed staged demonstrations outside the PA building against the nefarious act perpetrated by Terry Jones and Wayne Sapp. Rana Mashood on the occasion stated that it wasn’t the time of doing politics or going for point scoring so all the members should exhibit their love and association with the Holy Quran. The session was adjourned till Friday.
