Punjab Minister Azma Bukhari Advocates Stricter Social Media Regulations

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has urged the government to intensify efforts in regulating social media platforms, emphasizing the dangers of misinformation and fake content. She suggested that platforms should face potential bans if regulation cannot be effectively enforced.

Bukhari expressed her frustration during a media address on September 30th, calling for regulating these platforms or their shutdown if compliance is not possible. “The social media platforms are making money in Pakistan but are not accountable to anyone. If social media apps cannot be regulated, they should better be shut down,” she stated.

Bukhari pointed out that social media is regulated globally, except in Pakistan, where the absence of regulations allows platforms to operate without oversight. She emphasized the importance of introducing laws to ensure responsible usage and address social media’s growing impact on individuals and communities. Her comments are part of an ongoing national dialogue on digital platform regulation, following previous government actions to block certain apps for security reasons.

Bukhari’s statements echo recent comments made by Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on September 27th regarding the ongoing ban on X (formerly Twitter). Tarar defended the ban, citing security risks posed by separatist and terrorist groups, such as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), who allegedly used the platform for live broadcasts of terrorist activities and spreading anti-state propaganda. He said it aims to protect national security.

Tarar stressed that the restriction focuses on enforcing compliance with local laws, not suppressing free expression.
