Punjab Information Minister Advocates for Strict Social Media Regulation
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari emphasized the need for strong rules to manage social media. During a press meeting on August 2, Bokhari explained that the government’s goal is not to oppose social media but to ensure its safe and responsible use.
She noted that many countries create laws to prevent problems and misuse of freedom on social media. “We need to follow these global practices to stop abuses and distorted behaviors in our society,” she stated.
Highlighting the dangers of unchecked social media, Bokhari mentioned that it could lead to digital terrorism if not properly regulated. “We must control all social media accounts with strict rules to prevent them from becoming sources of harm,” she declared.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has reportedly completed the technical preparations necessary to lift the ban on X. PTA Chairman Hafeezur Rehman noted that only 7% of the complaints against the platform were resolved in the past three months. The authority now awaits the federal government’s final decision to reinstate access to the platform, contingent on its compliance with national laws.
