PU college principal suspended for harassing female staff

LAHORE: The Principal of the Punjab University’s College of Earth and Environmental Sciences (CEES), Prof Dr Iftikhar Hussain Baloch, has been suspended on charges of harassing the female staff of the varsity.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Muslim Town police had registered two cases against Dr Baloch on Monday for sexually harassing and threatening two female staffers. The notification regarding suspension of Prof Dr Iftikhar Hussain Baloch was issued on Tuesday. However, it did not mention the reason of his suspension.

According to a press release issued by the PU, on the direction of the Syndicate, the vice chancellor removed Prof Dr Iftikhar Ahmed from the post of the principal of the College of Earth and Environmental Sciences with immediate effect.

“In accordance with the powers vested in him under Section 15(4)(vi) of the University of the Punjab Act, 1973, the vice chancellor has further ordered to transfer Prof Dr Iftikhar Hussain Baloch to the Institute of Geology. In accordance with the powers vested in him, the vice chancellor also suspends Prof Iftikhar Baloch till further orders,” the PU press release said.

Prof Riaz Ahmad Sheikh from the Institute of Geology has been appointed as the principal of the CEES.

A PU official, seeking anonymity, said Dr Baloch would be served with a notice while disciplinary proceedings would also be initiated against him soon. It is also pertinent to mention here that Dr Baloch got prominence in April this year when he was attacked and thrashed by activists of the Islami Jamiat Talaba.
