PTV scam echoes in PAC

ISLAMABAD: The mega scam in purchasing equipment for the state-owned Pakistan Television echoed in the Public Accounts Committee Wednesday when a PPP lawmaker, Noor Alam Khan, claimed he could prove that $1.5 million were taken as commission for moving the file.

During the PAC meeting Noor Alam Khan enquired from secretary information and broadcasting Taimoor Azmat whether it was in his knowledge that Rs3-billion grant-in-aid was provided by China and a firm had paid $1.5 million in commission for selecting its equipment.

The information secretary denied the report saying nothing in this regard yet has been finalised. He said nothing has been purchased and no firm has been selected yet. He told the committee that one of the Chinese companies offered the equipment free of cost. “We are still in the process of writing down the agreement. So there is no question of taking commission. If the government allows us, then we will move forward otherwise not,” he added. He said under the rules the country that provides grant also selects the company.
