PTI Criticizes Govt for Internet Throttling

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has criticized the government for throttling the internet, accusing officials of targeting political opposition while causing significant economic losses. Citing a Top10VPN.com report, PTI’s Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqqas Akram said that Pakistan incurred $1.62 billion in losses in 2024, the highest globally due to internet shutdowns.

Pakistan recorded the highest economic losses worldwide due to internet shutdowns in 2024, surpassing nations experiencing civil wars. Akram blamed officials, including the IT minister and chairman of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, for policies that cost the economy Rs1.3 billion in just one day of internet shutdown. Akram said that instead of scapegoating the internet, Pakistan’s worsening security was due to “misguided priorities and flawed policies.”

The PTI leader said that during his party founder Imran Khan’s tenure, Pakistan experienced “a period of exemplary peace.”

“The power-hungry clique’s ill-advised policy will have far-reaching devastating economic consequences for the country, including the loss of substantial foreign exchange earnings and potential business contracts,” Akram said. He said that despite government initiatives like ‘Uraan Pakistan’ and proposed 5G expansion, Pakistan’s “economic flight would remain a dream.”

He called for uninterrupted, high-speed internet access to support IT exports and revitalize the economy. He said the government was “obsessed with implementing flawed policies that throttle the internet, repeatedly shutting down services with flimsy excuses,” leading to a mass exodus of IT professionals.
