PTA Says No Directive Received for Mobile Services Suspension; Media Reports Suggest Partial Suspension of Mobile & Internet Services in Islamabad, KP and Punjab
On November 21, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General Hafeezur Rehman (Retd), while speaking to the media, clarified that they have not yet received any official directives to suspend mobile services in the country. His statement comes amid growing speculation over possible disruptions ahead of planned political activities.
Media reports, citing unnamed sources, have indicated that the federal government is contemplating the activation of a national firewall for mobile internet services beginning November 22. According to Geo, the federal government decided to “partially suspend” internet and mobile services in Islamabad, and areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.
Reports suggest that partial internet and mobile service suspensions could begin on November 23.
The reported measures coincide with preparations for a protest announced by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Islamabad on November 24. The party has indicated that the demonstration will continue until its demands, including the release of its incarcerated founder Imran Khan are met.
