PTA Rolls Out VPN Service Providers Registration Framework: No Applications So Far

Pakistan Press Foundation

Ten days after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) initiated a process for VPN service providers to register and comply with local regulations, no applications have been received. Launched on December 19, this move by the PTA aims to bring VPN services under formal regulatory oversight and enforce compliance with Pakistan’s data protection laws.

Under the new licensing rules, VPN providers must pay a fee ranging from Rs100,000 to Rs300,000 and establish local data centers. Sources expressed hope that applications will start coming in within the next two to four weeks.

The registration drive follows a series of consultations with industry stakeholders, including the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA), which formally requested this registration to “streamline operations.”

Although no applications have been received so far, officials expect VPN providers to start registering within the next two to four weeks. Companies are reportedly reviewing the registration process before filing applications.
