PTA issues clarification about VPNs being blocked in Pakistan

On September 10, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued a clarification about VPNs being blocked in Pakistan. As per the PTA, recent news circulating in the media about the PTA blocking VPNs; however, the authority clarified that this was not being done.

“However, PTA is encouraging all IT companies, software houses, freelancers and banks, etc. to register their IPs for using VPNs so that in case of any disruption, the internet services to these entities are not affected,” the clarification read.

According to the PTA, the VPN registration is a “one window operation” available at the PTA and PSEB website and takes two to three days free of charge.

The PTA had earlier successfully registered 20,437 Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) as part of an ongoing initiative aimed at regulating VPN usage within the country. This move was intended to ensure compliance with national laws and secure the country’s digital infrastructure.
