Protests continue: Activists demand release of missing bloggers

LAHORE: Hundreds of civil society members staged a demonstration against the abduction of social media activists, including Islamabad-based Salman Haider, in front of the Lahore Press Club on Thursday.

The protesters, carrying posters of the abducted victims and placards inscribed with demands for release, shouted slogans against the illegal abductions.

Naveed Rapheal, a member of a rights organisation, said the abduction of progressive writers, poets, academics and activists was unacceptable. “The abduction of social media activists is an unjust act and the government must immediately release them,” he demanded.

Another activist Adnan Mohsin said the fundamental rights and Constitution of Pakistan guaranteed freedom of speech and expression. “Abduction of Salman Haider and other activists is an attack on basic fundamental rights,” he added.

Rawadari Tehreek chairman Samson Salamat said the abduction of Salman and other progressive bloggers raised serious questions about the performance of federal and provincial governments as well as all the institutions responsible for the safety and security of the citizens.

The activists also held a rally around Shimla Pahari and its adjacent roads, blocking the thoroughfare for traffic for hours.
