‘Protection of women rights a priorityÂ’

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain has said that the present government believes in gender equality and has always advocated protection of women’s rights.

He was talking to the UNIFEM delegation, headed by Aalice Shalkalford, here on Saturday. He said that the provincial government, led by the Awami National Party (ANP), had an ideological commitment to work for empowerment of women and giving them due status.

According to a handout, the minister said that due to militancy and floods women in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had suffered the most, directly or indirectly, and most of them had lost their dependents.

“We are not narrow-minded people and believe in broad vision of women rights,” he said.Mr Hussain said that Pakhtun women today were working in different fields.

He said that the setting up of Bacha Khan Women Institute was under consideration where women would be imparted training in different fields, so that they could support their families. “We have also established a commission for the rights of women, headed by a woman minister, and given it the task of protection of women rights,” he said.
