Proposed bills on sexual harassment hailed

KARACHI —The Alliance Against Sexual Harassment (AASHA) has welcomed the legislative proposal to table two bills in the National Assembly to curb sexual harassment at workplace.

“We welcome the government’s initiative to propose concrete legislative measures entailing a new bill to institute an anti-sexual harassment policy and an amendment in Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and we hope that the government will fulfill its promise by taking practical steps,” said representatives of AASHA, an alliance of six national organisations, in a statement on Wednesday.

The AASHA noted that the magnitude of the issue of sexual harassment at workplace was very high which could only be tackled by proper legislation and strict implementation.

According to AASHA’s research, sexual harassment and intimidation was the biggest challenge being faced by women at workplace.

In a recent meeting, in Islamabad, presided over by minister for women development had announced to table two bills in the National Assembly to address the issue of sexual harassment at workplace.
