Prominent Tribal Leader Abdul Khaliq Wazir Killed in Targeted Attack

Prominent tribal leader and recipient of the Presidential Award Abdul Khaliq Wazir was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in Khojal Khel Wana, South Waziristan, on February 21. The attack took place near Wana Press Club on Azam Warsak Road.  Abdul Khaliq was rushed to District Headquarters Hospital in Wana and later referred to a hospital in Dera Ismail Khan but he succumbed to the critical injuries on the way.

Abdul Khaliq had a degree in journalism from Gomal University. Speaking to Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), Wana Press Club President Shehzada Wazir shared that Abdul Khaliq had attended a conference at the Wana Press Club on the morning of his murder. Shehzada clarified that Abdul Khaliq was not a practicing journalist nor registered with the press club. Shehzada shared that Abdul Khaliq had previously launched a newspaper called Wazir News and recently created a Facebook page, Wazir Post, managed by his team.

According to The Khyber Chronicles, law enforcement agencies launched an investigation, but the attackers had not been identified or arrested.

Qismat Wazir, Editor and Media Manager at Wazir TV, shared that Abdul Khaliq had received threats for several days.

He was laid to rest in his ancestral village, Ziri Noor.
