Proficiency in English is essential for journalism

Karachi: Attaining proficiency in English is essential especially in the field of journalism. This was stated by Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister on Information, Jamil Ahmed Soomro.

He was speaking on the occasion of commencement of English language programme for journalists at the Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Monday.

The programme has been initiated by the Sindh Information Department in collaboration with the Karachi City Education ñ an English teaching organisation.

More than two dozen journalists from newspaper and television channels are attending the programme.

Soomro announced that cash awards would be instituted for journalists excelling in the profession and that these would be on annual basis.

He said that for the resolution of problems of the journalists a helpline would also be initiated. The adviser said that steps would also be taken for the welfare of the journalists.

Sindh Secretary Information, Mumtaz Shah hailed the launching of the English learning programme for the working journalists.

President of KPC, Imtiaz Ahmed Khan Faran said that learning was a life-long process. He said that it would be beneficial for the journalists to attain proficiency in English language. The members of the governing body of KPC were also present on the occasion.
